Simmental hat-trick - Lisglass herd claims third successive championship in Balmoral

Balmoral Simmental 1

The Weatherup family’s Lisglass herd scored a hat-trick, securing the Simmental championship at Balmoral Park for the third year in succession.

Retaining the male and supreme overall titles was last year’s breed champion Dermotstown Delboy ET exhibited by Leslie and Iris Weatherup, and son Christopher, from Ballyclare, County Antrim. Three years ago they won their first-ever Balmoral championship with the intermediate heifer Slieveroe Caroline.

Dermotstown Delboy is stock bull in the 35-cow herd. Bred by Dublin-based breeder Chris White, he was purchased privately at eleven-months-old. “We admired the bull at Tullamore Show in 2013 when he won the national yearling bull championship,” recalls Leslie. Sired by Kilbride Farm Newry, he was bred from the Raceview King daughter Brookwood Regina.

The Simmental classes at this year’s show were judged by breed society president David Donnelly from the Atlow Herd in Derbyshire. He described the champion as a super bull with tremendous size and scope. “He has everything going for him, and is very hard to fault. This bull is long and clean, has a great backend and good legs and feet.”

Securing the reserve supreme accolade at the 147th annual show was the female champion Raceview Cindy Matilda ET, a September 2011 born cow exhibited by Wesley Abraham from Irvinestown, County Fermanagh. Bred by Peter and Marion O’Connell from Cork, she was purchased at Roscommon in November 2012. A former national yearling heifer champion, she was sired by Kilbride Farm Newry, and is bred from Raceview Matilda Stella.

In-calf to the Balmoral champion Dermotstown Delboy, she is due in December, and is one of five cows in the Magheracrigan herd founded in 1979.

“This is a tremendous young cow,” added the judge. “She is a big cow with great scope, and is a real credit to her owner and breeders. Unfortunately for her, she was over powered by the bull on the day.”

Taking the reserve award in the male championship line-up was the sixteen-month-old Kilmore Franko bred by first-time exhibitor at Balmoral Chris Traynor from Armagh, County Armagh. Sired by the herd’s 12,000gns stock bull Kilbride Farm Bantry, he was bred from the Cleenagh Flasher daughter Glebefarm Beauty.

Mr Traynor has been breeding Simmentals for five years and currently runs a herd of 24 females. Kilmore Franko also secured the junior championship, and was described the David Donnelly as a strong young bull. “He is clean through the front, has a great top and hind end, and sound feet and legs.”

Brothers Shane and Paul McDonald from Tempo, County Fermanagh, won the reserve female championship with the home-bred Coolcran Lady Erin, who emerged as winner of the 10-strong intermediate heifer class. Sired by the Raceview King son Ashland Brandy, her dam is the privately purchased Ashland Lady Wendy  - one of 12 breeding females in the herd founded in 2006.

“This is a very sweet young heifer with a great top line. She is one I would really love to take home,” said the judge who referred to the event as a superb show.

Runner-up for the junior championship was Woodford Penny, a sixteen-month-old Kilbride Farm Newry daughter bred by Thelma Gorman from Armagh. This one is bred from the Ballintlea King daughter Woodford Paula.

The qualifiers for the Ivomec Super Simmental Pair of the Year competition were the two-year-old Drumlone Anchor daughters Scribby Farms Exquisiter and Scibby Farms Elegant, shown by Keith and Andrea Nelson, Rosslea, County Fermanagh.
