Weatherups Claim First Balmoral Show Championship

By Julie Hazelton

An outstanding heifer with lots of breed character was how Scottish judge Gerald Smith described the Simmental champion at this year’s 145th Balmoral Show (15th-17th May).

“This is an exceptionally stylish intermediate heifer with plenty of size, length, and good legs and feet. She is well fleshed, but not overdone,” said Mr Smith who runs the 100-cow Drumsleed pedigree herd, alongside 150 commercial suckler cows.

Female and supreme overall Simmental champion was Sliveroe Caroline shown by Christopher Weatherup, Ballyclare.

Claiming the plaudits at the event, held for the first time at the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society’s new home at Balmoral Park , was the October 2011 born Silveroe Caroline, exhibited by the father and son team of Leslie and Christopher Weatherup, Ballyclare, County Antrim.

Bred by Adrian Bateman, she was purchased at Roscommon in November 2012 for 2,800 Euros. Sired by the noted Kilbride Farm Newry, her dam is Clonagh Willow.

This much-admired heifer claimed the female championship award before clinching the breed’s supreme overall championship title. Leslie and Christopher Weatherup run the 40-cow Lisglass herd, and were delighted to secure their first-ever Balmoral Show championship.

Reserve female champion and reserve supreme champion was Garrett and Lyndsey Behan's Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous. At the halters are Garrett Behan and Gail Houliston.

Standing in reserve supreme position was an eye-catching cow and calf outfit from Garrett and Lyndsey Behan, who had made the journey from Ballyfin in County Laois.

The October 2009 born Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous is by the herd’s 8,500gns Welsh-bred stock bull Banwy T-Rex, himself Balmoral Show champion in 2009; while her dam is Cloneygowan Shania Babe ET.  At foot was her Clonagh Tiger Gallant bull calf.

Gerald Smith said:”This is a super young cow with a nice bull calf at foot. She is feminine and walks well, but on the day is carrying slightly more flesh than the champion.”

Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous is no stranger to show success, having been reserve female of the year in 2011 and 2012; and winner of three national titles.

Alastair Shortt exhibited Killynure Darwin, the junior champion and male champion, owned by Raymond Porter, Omagh.

Claiming the male championship ribbons was the January 2012 born Killynure Darwin bred by Raymond and Joan Porter from Omagh, County Tyrone. He was sired by Omorga Murray, and is out of the home-bred Killynure Twinkle.

Reserve junior champion was Ranfurly Blende bred by David Hazelton, Dungannon.

Killynure Darwin also secured the junior championship award; with reserve place going to the junior heifer class winner, Ranfurly Blende 4th, exhibited by David Hazelton, Dungannon. Born in January 2012, she is by Hillcrest Valentine, and out of the Raceview King daughter Ranfurly Blende 2nd.

Senior bull class winner and reserve male champion was Corhammock Cosmo Clarke bred by Johnathan Farrell, Markethill.

The reserve male champion was Corhammock Cosmo Clarke, a June 2011 born Camus Frontier son, bred and exhibited by Jonathan Farrell from Markethill, County Armagh.

Concluding Gerald Smith said it was an honour to judge at Balmoral. “This is my first-ever visit to Balmoral Show, and I am delighted to have had the opportunity to judge the Simmental section, especially as it’s the first event at the new showgrounds.

“There was a good show of cattle, with quality animals at the top-end of each class. The intermediate heifer class stood out, while the cow class also had some very good examples of the breed.”
