Borderway Agri Expo Calf Show

report by Chrissie Long

Taking the Simmental calf championship were Messrs Barlow Brothers with their Irish-bred heifer calf Auroch Eve. This Auroch Ace daughter was bought at just four hours old. She is out of Auroch Wave and goes back to Raceview Merle Beauty. On her first outing Eve now heads for the Stars of the Future Calf Show at Stirling in a fortnight’s time.

Judge Bridget Borlase said she had been an easy winner in both her class and the championship. She’s outstanding for her age, is full of femininity and is a great correct, showy heifer with plenty of breed character.” Standing reserve here were Jim and Patricia Goldie with their bull calf Newbiemains Dominator, a Blackford Albatross son out of Newbiemains Vicky.

The championship animals were picked out by Bridget from over 30 pedigree calves entered today. Jim and Patricia Goldie took the first of the prizes with bull calf Newbiemains Dominator, sired by a stock bull Blackford Albatross purchased from Stirling in 2010. Second in the class was Allan Tallentire’s Swingletree Diego, sired by Swingletree Buster.

Messrs Storersmith took the top prize in the class for December to February born bull calves with Storersmith Equinox. This bull was born in January 2013 and is sired by Storersmith Braveheart.

The third and final class of bulls was claimed by the April-born calf, Blackpool Edan. This is a Denizes Blizzard son, forward from David Loftus. Next to him, David Lowry brought his Pode Hole Warrant son in the line, Keeldrum Enzo. And following him was his half brother, Keeldrum Eurostar in third.

The heifers kicked off with leader Storersmith Daydream, a Storersmith Braveheart daughter and out of the homebred female Storersmith Butterscotch. The blue rosette was given to the Gwynne family of Newton Stewart, with Chestermann Bernard Stella. While in third place was her half-sister Chestermann Bernard Mirander. Jim and Patricia Goldie stood at the top of the second female class with their Fearna Anfield heifer, Newbiemains Devotion. Beside her was Storersmith Electra and in third place was Newbiemains Dollybird, again from the Goldie’s.

The penultimate class, was taken by the overall champion, Auroch Eve from Messrs Barlow Brothers. Messrs Chadwick took the second and third prizes home with Chadston Tollies Delight, a Omorga Baldwin daughter and Chadston Evie’s Gem, sired by Dirnanean Bradley.

The last of the classes was the pairs class. The Gwynne family took the top prize, followed by Messrs Storersmith and then Messrs Chadwick, Hilton in third.
