A well represented selection of breed enthusiasts and new
breeders packed Perth Auction Mart on Friday 18th July 2008
to see the Spring Calving portion of Hector Mackaskill’s
Woodhall Herd, gross over £200,000 for the 92 animals
sold.
The herd was being reduced purely due to the fact that
most of the females have to be wintered away from home and
the herd size had grown too big to cope with this.
The Woodhall herd’s record at Perth in particular, where
bulls had been sold to a top of 13,000gns and females previously
to 6,000gns was always bound to attract some serious bidding
for the outstanding breed lines.
Every beast forward found
a new home, peaking half way through the sale when J.L. & C.J.
Weatherup, Lisglass Road, Irish Hill, Ballyclare, Northern
Ireland, bought Woodhall Sonata for 8,000gns. Sonata, who is
by Woodhall Porter, a son of Mackney Hector and out of Woodhall
Pixie by Woodhall Liqueur, was sold with her first calf at
foot, Woodhall Wilona, a March born heifer calf by Ballinalare
Farm Rival. She had been running with Annick Talisker, the
bull Hector bought from Lachlan Quarm’s Annick Herd at
Perth in the spring for 20,000gns. It was clear as the day
went on that the Mackney Hector breed lines would feature strongly
in the sale.
Only four lots earlier, another Northern Ireland purchaser,
R & R Rogers, Race Road, Portglenone, Co. Antrim paid 7,000gns
for a daughter of Mackney Hector, Woodhall Sadie, whose breed
lines go back to Carnkern Titan on the dam’s side. She
went to Northern Ireland with her May born heifer calf, Woodhall
Wakeisha, who is by Ballinalare Farm Rival and again goes back
to Camus Brandy.
While Northern Ireland breeders featured highly in the sale,
Scottish breeders were not to be outdone in this one off chance
to buy these breedlines. Near neighbours Lindsey and Dorothy
Moffat, Innerwick, Dunbar, took two lots home next door.
Firstly,
when they bought Woodhall Marjorie for 6,500gns, an ET daughter
of Woodhall Hannah by Carnkern Titan and with her bull calf
Woodhall Warbuton at foot, who is by one of the current stock
bulls, Corrick Nebraska. Nebraska was purchased privately in
2003 and was shown successfully that year before becoming a
major influence in the herd since. She was sold having run
since late May with Annick Talisker Marjorie carries particularly
high figures for both Terminal Sire index and Self Replacing
Index.
Later in the sale Woodhall
Tarsha joined the Innerwick herd for 2000gns. Again with Mackney
Hector breeding on the sire side and Rickardson Jumbo in the
dam side she sold having been running with Nebraska.
Ian Green of Corskie, Garmouth, Fochaber,
also supported the herd when he purchased Woodhall Romance,
a 2004 daughter of Mackney Hector and again with Titan breedlines
on the dam side, for 5,500gns. She was sold with her third
calf at foot, Woodhall Wrendi, a daughter of Kentucky Kid.
He also added Woodhall Margot to the Corskie herd for 3,000gns,
with her bull calf Woodhall Watson at foot, another son of
Kentucky Kid. Margot is by Woodhall Javan and out of Woodhall
Hope, by Blackford Elite. She had been running with Corrick
Nebraska
Stuart Stronach, Berryleys, Grange, Keith parted with 5,000gns
to take ownership of Woodhall mistress, a 6 year old cow also
by Woodhall Javan and out of Woodhall Baroness, by Camus Volunteer.
Her outstanding four month old bull calf which went with her
is by another of the Woodhall Stock sires, Corrick Kentucky
Kid. Perhaps one of the biggest influences on the breed in
recent years, Kentucky Kid was purchased by Paul Clements at
Perth in 2001, where as Supreme Champion he commanded the then
record price of 22,000gns. He was bought by Woodhall in 2006
at the Darsham Dispersal.
Lachlan Quarm bought back a little part of his 20,000gns sale
of Annick Talisker when he bought Woodhall Secilia who had
been running with Talisker and sold for 4,800gns with her heifer
calf Woodhall Wanika at foot, by Ballinalare Farm Rival.
Messrs E.C Robertson & Co of Grieves Cottage, Dalkieth
Home Farm, Dalkieth, paid 4,200gns for their pick of the day,
Woodhall Saphire, again by Mackney Hector and in calf to Kentucky
Kid, with her current bull calf, Woodhall Wagner at foot by
Ballinalare Farm Rival. They later added Woodhall Tamara to
their herd when they paid 3,200gns for this 2006 cow with her
second calf Woodhall Willoughby at foot, a bull calf again
by Ballinalare Farm Rival and she had been running this time
with Talisker.
Woodhall Sherbet, another daughter of Mackney Hector and out
of Woodhall Kim, who is again by Carnkern Titan, sold to Mr.
P McDiarmid, Shenlarich, Lawers, Aberfeldy for 3,800 gns. Her
Ballinalare Farm Rival bull calf Woodhall Wexford went with
her, with his dam having run to date with Nebraska.
Three lots made 3,200gns. The first to Mr. S. Smith, Sunnyhill
Croft, Turriff when he purchased Woodhall Petuna, a daughter
of Woodhall Liqueur with her Kentucky Kid bull calf, Woodhall
Whitaker at foot. The second 3,200gns purchase was made two
lots later, when a telephone bid from Joe Wilson, Balinlare
Farm, Newry, Co. Down bought Woodhall Pastel a Javan daughter
with her heifer calf Woodhall Wilanna another Kentucky Kid
calf at foot.
The heifers were a sound trade throughout topping at 2,800gns
three times!
Firstly Mr Smith, Sunny Hill croft, added to his previous purchase
when he bought Woodhall Tina, another Mackney Hector daughter
in calf to Corrick Nebraska. Next another Northern Ireland
buyer, this time Andrew Patterson, Brookmount Road, Ballindervy,
Co. Tyrone purchased Woodhall Tahiti by Corrick Nebraska out
of Woodhall Pansy by Woodhall Liqueur, in calf to Castlehill
Thomas. Finally Clive Houldey waited to the third last lot
in the ring to secure his choice in the maiden heifer Woodhall
Virtue. By Corrick Nebraska she is an October 2007 born calf
out of a Woodhall Praline by Corrick Kingtson.
46 Cows averaged £2,707.17
46 heifers averaged £1659.46
