ABERDEEN & NORTHERN MARTS PRESS RELEASE

Pedigree bulls sold to a top price of 3,400gn at the spring show and sale at Thainstone Centre on Wednesday, March 2nd 2005.

The event was run by Aberdeen & Northern Marts as part of the 2005 Royal Northern Spring Show and was held under the auspices of the British Charolais, Limousin, Simmental and Aberdeen-Angus cattle societies.

In the Charolais classes, Blelack Ulysses from renowned exhibitor Neil Massie of Blelack, Dinnet, Aboyne led the way and went on to be named overall champion for 2005 by judge Mr R. Aitken, Strathvithie Bridge, St Andrews. The April 2003-born bull by Blelack Montgomery was bred and exhibited by Mr Massie and went on to fetch 3,000gn when sold to Mr C. Smith, Mains of Landerberry Farm, Echt.

Mr Massie also achieved the second highest price of the day (3,200gn) with his home-bred second-prizewinning Blelack Uniform by Maerdy Grimaldi.

Reserve Charolais champion and realising 2,300gn was the June 2003-born Haltcliffe Ulysses by Brampton Chopper from J. Irvine & Sons, Inverlochy, Tomintoul.

The top price of the sale (3,400gn) was paid for the Limousin champion, Taymar Uro – a March 2003-born bull by Linross Longjohn bred and exhibited by M. R. Taylor, Kirkhill Farm, Alves, Elgin.

The reserve champion Limousin came from W. Robertson & Son, Fodderletter Farms, Tomintoul and the May 2003-born Fodderletter Uefa by Smithson Olympic realised 2,900gn.

From W. J. Barclay, Whiteknowes, Deskford, Cullen came both the champion and reserve champion Simmentals. Champion was the September 2003-born Whiteknowes Pioneer by Slievenagh Fantastic which made 2,100gn, while the reserve – the September 2003-born Whiteknowes Punch by Islavale Marvel – achieved 1,700gn.

Aberdeen Angus champion was the April 2003-born Ardoyne Equinox by Ardoyne Juggernaut Eric Z011 from H. & H. Rennie, Westfield of Ardoyne, Insch which realised 2,000gn while the reserve champion – Benachie Perjink by Lochdhu Elfking – came from A. Stronach, North Skelmanae, Strichen and also realised 2,000gn.

Commenting on the sale, Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ auctioneer Allan Taylor said: “There was a good turnout of people at the ringside, no doubt boosted by the presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. There was solid trade throughout the sale and particularly good demand for quality bulls ready to work.”
