After completing the business of our AGM, held at the Farmers
Club in March, we welcomed Fiona Sloan, Breed Development and Promotions
Manager, to talk to us about her plans for the future of the breed
and update us on the Society’s plans for the coming year
and the pending World Congress in 2008.
In April the club held
a meeting at the South of England Showground where we were joined
by members of the S.E. Aberdeen Angus and Charolais clubs and any
other breeders interested in learning about the ABRI programme.
Barbara Webster came down from Scotland to give an in-depth talk
on the ABRI breed recording system, and demonstrated how information
can be recorded and accessed around the world via the internet.
In May, we had a club visit to David and Lesley Sapsed’s
Heathbrow herd, where we saw some very good cattle. It was of particular
interest to see their work towards producing a naturally polled
herd, many of which are progeny of Hockenhull Kramer who seems
to be breeding very well.
On a beautifully sunny day, we enjoyed
an excellent Sunday lunch in their garden, which is well worth
a visit in its own right. Our thanks go to David and Lesley for
their wonderful hospitality.
Once again, many of our members supported
local and County shows, with some notable successes. Congratulations
go to the Borlase family for winning the Simmental Male Champion
at the Royal, and overall Breed Champion at the Great Yorkshire
with their stock bull, Glenturk Nomad.
At the Royal Show Junior
Stockjudging competition, Emma and Luke Blomfield were placed third,
with Luke taking first place for the Junior Individual award. Congratulations
to both of them.
Our herd competition was held in July, and our
thanks go to John Dykes for giving up four days to judge.
