by Mary Thurston
In November 2006 an Extraordinary AGM was convened to discuss
the future of the Club. Brian Lundy our Secretary had resigned,
Mary Thurston took on the post and Margaret Steele was elected
as Vice- Chairman.
It was decided that we should change the format of the Club,
formal meetings with guest speakers were no longer viable
and so it was decided that Farm Walks will be arranged.
Brian Lundy has been our Secretary since the formation of
the Club in 1996. Brian has worked tirelessly for the Club
and his dedication is well known to all, and during his tenure
he was ‘The Eastern Simmental Club’. Brian will
continue to serve on the Committee, and will continue to
give the Club his unstinting support.
2007 commenced with our Annual Dinner in January at Arties
Mill, Brigg. It was a great success, being one of the best
attended dinners we have arranged. Members enjoyed good food
and good company.
At the AGM in March the Committee was returned unopposed,
unfortunately the weather was foggy, and few members braved
the conditions.
The first of our Farm Walks in April was well attended by
about 25 members who visited Pat and Mary Thurston’s,
Ferrylane herd. The day was blessed with lovely weather and
members and friends enjoyed a leisurely social visit.
In May at the Thirsk Simmental Sale, Margaret and Ian Steele
sold the top price heifer, Blakewell Gentian Snowdrop for
1550 gns, and Blakewell Katies Mischief for 1300 gns. David
and Jayne Picks, Scarthingwell Songbird made 1220 gns.
Congratulations must also go to the Blakewell herd who had
Champion Female and Reserve Overall Champion at Carlisle
with Blakewell Mischiefs Rosette.

Newark Show also saw our members having a successful Show.
Lincoln Show is one of the main events, and is well supported
by Club members, with two of our new members doing well.
Mr. Rob Hopkinson won with his bull Hollingwood Tom and Tom
Hill took Breed Champion with Scotland Denise, following
in his grandfathers, Mr. Peter Hill’s footsteps. In
the Eastern Club sponsored Breeders Class (Cow and Calf)
this was expertly judged by Peter Goldsbrough, who had no
difficulty working out the scoring system which is 60% of
the marks going to the calf and 40% going to the cow. When
showing is finished our members provide our traditional buffet
for members and friends at the Show. Special thanks must
go to all the Club ladies, especially Margaret Steele and
June Brears who coordinate this feast.

Our Farm visits continued in September, when we were invited
by the North Eastern Club to join them for a visit to the
Moorside Herd near Pickering, an interesting herd, where
the cold wind was outweighed by the warm welcome.
The year concluded with a joint day with the North Eastern
Club when we visited David and Jayne Pick’s Scarthingwell
herd, they not only showed some wonderful stock in prime
condition but also ordered us some lovely sunshine for mid
October. From there we travelled in convoy to Mike and June
Brears Beaghall herd. Here we saw his renowned ‘Trixiebelle’ cow
and calves, some of which are naturally polled by his use
of a German bull. These herds were a fitting end to our year
which has proved to have been both social and allowed members
the opportunity to discuss the different animals we have
seen and given us much food for thought.
