CENTRE WEST CLUB REPORT 2010
by John Rixon
The year started with our AGM at Farmers Fayre in Stoneleigh Park.
After the business side had been completed teams of 4 including
other Cattle Societies took part in a quiz. Peter Burgess was the
Quizmaster and the winning team comprised of members of the Kenilworth
Show Committee.
The Bristol Sale in April was well attended members again triumphed
with David Bell’s bull Crackley White Knight selling to the
Top Price of 4,200gns. Boddington Estates won all 3 Female Classes
and again bidding for these was brisk. The October Sale was slower
in common with others. However David Bush achieved the Top Price
with his bull Chapman’s Apollo. Females met an excellent
trade including the first production sale from Burytown. This should
be an encouragement for other breeders to sell at the Bristol venue.
The Annual Dinner was held at the Manor House, Moreton in Marsh.
Richard Price was our guest speaker and had kindly travelled down
from Cumbria where he currently manages a large estate. He was
formely head at Moreton Morrell Agricultural College and was always
enthusiastic about their Simmental Herd.
Our farm walk was held at Glympton Estate on May 16th, a 2300,
acre estate owned by HRH Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz,
the farm has mixed enterprises but prides itself on its herd prize
winning Angus Cattle. However, it also runs a commercial herd using
Simmental Females producing beef for Waitrose. Ben Wilson, the
Farm Manager showed us around the cattle in the picturesque setting.
Andrew the head Stockman took us around the purpose built stock
buildings and grain stores, all constructed to a very high standard.
Everyone enjoyed refreshments afterwards.
Rob Hewlett judges the Kenilworth Show in July. David Bush achieved
Reserve Champion with his heifer Chapman’s Rhubarbs Adonis.
The Club donated £100 to sponsor the Young Handles Classes.
At the Royal Cornwall, Jimmy McMillan lead out both the Supreme
and Female Champion Sterling Michelle’s Rhapsody plus the
Reserve Male and Reserve Female. Boddingtons also took first prize
in the pairs and secured the Interbreed Champion. An excellent
result and credit to the whole team. Furthermore the National Show
at the Great Yorkshire Jimmy achieved the Supreme and Female Champion
with Sterling Dolores Petra as well as success in the Interbreed.
During October the Club held its calf show at Cirencester Market.
An excellent show of Young Stock was presented to our Judge Nick
Gwynne, Both he and Nadia had travelled from Pembrokeshire on a
fine but cold day. Nevertheless we were all warmed up by a hot
curry provided by Master Chef’s David and Nikki Field. Nick
placed the Stock with an experienced eye, especially the Young
Handlers and later presented some of the cups. This year e had
a new cup for the best animal in the show given by Ron and Pam
Hewlett. Rob was still in New Zealand but Pam was in attendance
and presented the cup to James Kimber. Another new cup for the
Best Female was presented by David Bush. Many thanks to all those
who contributed to the success of the day including Sam Evans with
her Spot the Dog and Spot the ball competitions.
Matt Harris our Herd Judge also attended the calf show and presented
the results. Matt had done a thorough job as each of us were given
a score card with points and comments detailing his reasons. Many
thanks to Matt for giving up so much time and providing us with
positive feedback.
Overall the club had another successful year as shown by the members
commitment to the breed. To celebrate the year end we will atten
our Christmas Dinner at the March Hare in Broughton Hackett. Next
year we are looking forward to our involvement in the National
Show at Malvern.
