Improved Herds Awards 2016

Beanhill herd wins Improved Herd Award for the Simmental breed

The Beanhill herd, owned by James and Belinda Kimber from Christian Malford in Wiltshire, has been recognised by AHDB Beef & Lamb as the most Improved Herd of Simmental cattle in England for 2016. They have previously placed twice as reserve for this award with their Simmental herd in 2009 and their Charolais herd in 2011.

The award is presented by the AHDB Beef & Lamb Better Returns Programme (BRP) to the recorded herd that shows the greatest genetic gain for commercial characteristics over a 12-month period. There is a separate award for each of ten UK breeds.

After setting up an award-winning Jersey herd in West Wales, James moved to Beanhill Farm to start farming with Belinda in 1996. When they took it on, the 40 hectare lowland farm had been neglected for 40 years. The farm is located on the Dauntsey Vale at the edge of the Cotswolds. As they are on an area of heavy, clay soil, the cattle are housed in the winter to protect the ground. All cattle calve in the autumn, with heifers prepared for artificial insemination (AI) in November. Their target is to sell bulls at 18 months in the spring sales.

On moving to Wiltshire, they decided to concentrate on breeding high-quality, pedigree animals and while they developed the shed infrastructure required for their new cattle venture, they ran a flock of 1,000 commercial ewes plus followers. Seeing the dairy cross-bred calves available through the local market at Chippenham, they felt there was a demand in the area for Simmental bulls. James has bred Charolais cattle since his childhood so they decided to focus on developing two pedigree herds.

Some difficult years followed the Foot and Mouth Outbreak in 2001, when they sold the commercial sheep leaving only their pedigree Texel flock and a handful of pedigree cows. They worked freelance, clipping and washing cows for sales, before building up their pedigree Texel flock alongside establishing the Charolais and Simmental herds.

In 2004 they bought Celtic Noodle, a high-index, show champion Simmental cow. They bred up from there using AI. The cattle enterprise had built to 20 breeding females within each of the two pedigree herds but in recent years the Simmental numbers have reduced. Both herds have been performance recorded from the start. They run alongside a flock of 100 pedigree Texels and a small flock of Blue Texels which belong to their children; Joshua, Isabel and Richard.

They have an extra 40 hectares of grass keep and a flock of 400 Suffolk cross mules which they cross to their own Texel rams. Using an annual rotation between sheep and cattle, they manage a clean grazing system with different parcels of land being reseeded after six years.

James is keen to promote the value of using breeding traits to develop the beef industry and each year invites a group of Cirencester students to oversee the ultrasound scanning event taking place on his farm. He is encouraged by the enthusiasm and interest from the next generation of young farmers. He is also inspired by the work Neil Shand, Simmental breed secretary, is doing for the breed.

Mr Shand uses high and low-index Simmentals within the societies monitor herd and records subsequent calve performance from birth through to finish. He assesses full kill data, including retail meat yield, in order to demonstrate the advantage of using high-index bulls on a suckler herd.

James said: “The only way to monitor a herd’s development is by recording performance and coming from a dairy background, this was a no brainer for me. It takes a few years to build up and to understand each individual’s value within a herd.

“As a livestock producer you have a financial responsibility to provide good carcase value on an efficient rearing system.

“The muscle area must be assessed when recording to ensure you are promoting the development of length as well as conformation in your animals. There is high value in the loin of the carcase and this needs to be considered and developed rather than simply focusing on backend.”

The herd tag line is “High index for a commercially profitable future” and they believe in producing bulls that will provide customers with the potential to make a profit. With this is mind, the Beanhill Simmental has reduced to ten cows in recent years, retaining only the most productive females.

“The Simmental benefits from being a maternal and a terminal breed so I am keen to promote easy calving combined with length and use the figures to guide my decisions.

“All cows retained have a self-replacing index (SRI) of over 100 which makes them one of the highest indexed herds in the country.”

The last AI sire used was Dirnanean Bradley. At the time he had not been used massively but has gone on to produce a lovely group of calves at Beanhill. Bradley now stands as the number one bull in the country with 142 SRI points.

Showing acts as a shop window to promote their high-index cattle and they find the easy-calving attributes alongside their elite heath status assists sales. Recently his highest indexed heifer was sold to someone establishing their own herd.

Bulls are sold directly from home and also through pedigree sales with a focus to produce the best high index breeding they can manage to continue to drive the breed forward and appeal to the modern market.

Born in April 2014 she is by Raceview King, and out of the Dovefields Gallant daughter Ranfurly Lady Diana 10th. Scanned in-calf to Omorga Murray she attracted an opening bid of 5,000gns from the packed ringside audience, and after a bidding frenzy guest auctioneer David Lowry brought his gavel down at 8,800gns, selling to telephone bidders Fovargue Bros for their Edroda Herd based at Coleorton, Coalville in Leicester.

Just minutes before the Whitemire King Kong daughter Ranfurly Blende 5th, secured a bid of 5,100gns from Jimmy and Vikki Wood, owners of the Popes Herd based at Dutton in Lancashire. This April 2014 born heifer is bred from the Raceview King daughter Ranfurly Blende 2nd. She is scanned in-calf to Omorga Murray.

Lisglass herd secures Ivomec Super pairs title - Fermanagh County Show 2016

Lisglass herd secures

Ivomec Super pairs title

Ballyclare Simmental breeders Leslie and Christopher Weatherup were triumphant in the 2016 Ivomec Super Pair of the Year competition, held at Fermanagh County Show.

The father and son team exhibited the September 2014 born heifers Lisglass Fabulous and Lisglass Felicity. They qualified at Balmoral Show and are home-bred daughters of the 35-cow herd’s stock bull Dermotstown Delboy – male and supreme overall champion at Balmoral in 2014 and 2015.

English judge Bridget Borlase from the 120-cow Sacombe and Perrywood Herds in Hertfordshire said the winning pair stood out. “They are a true matching pair in terms of colour and type, and they parade well together.”

Six qualifying pairs competed for the prizes at the final. Standing in reserve position were two junior bulls from Joe Wilson’s Ballinlare Farm Herd based at Newry. Ballinlare Farm Goldenballs and Ballinlare Farm Galaxy qualified at Armagh Show, and are sons of the herd’s 20,000gns stock bull Auchorachan Wizard - Perth supreme champion in February 2010.

Bridget Borlase added: ”The young bulls are well fleshed and another true pair.”

Merial Animal Health’s territory sales manager Philip Clarke was on hand to congratulate the winners and present the prizes. The winners collected the prestigious Merial Crystal Decanter and a 500mls pack of Ivomec Super injection, while all finalists received a 200mls pack of Ivomec Super injection.

Almost 30 Simmentals competed for the prizes at Fermanagh County Show. Bridget Borlase praised the quality of the animals on show. “The standard of entries was high throughout all of the classes. There was no tail end, especially in the junior bull class which boasted ten very saleable young bulls.”

Taking the day’s supreme overall title was the female champion Ranfurly Lady Diana 24th, an April 2014 born Raceview King daughter bred by David Hazelton, Dungannon. “The champion oozes style and character,” said the judge. “She is a sweet heifer, long and clean, well fleshed, and parades well.”

Claiming the day’s reserve overall title was the male champion Coolcran Gladiator, a January 2015 born entry exhibited by brothers Shane and Paul McDonald, Tempo. He was sired by former stock bull Kilbride Farm Ahoghill.

“The reserve champion is a modern bull, long and clean, and square of his plates. He is well fleshed and full of breed character,” concluded Ms Borlase.

Runner-up for the female championship was Andrea and Keith Nelson’s Scribby Farms Fiona, a May 2014 born daughter of the 10,000gns herd sire Drumlone Anchor.

Securing the reserve male championship was Joe Wilson’s fourteen-month-old Auchorachan Wizard son, Ballinlare Farm Galaxy.

The DANI Rosebowl for the best performance recorded Simmental bull was awarded to Nigel Glasgow’s Bridgewater Farm Gilroy. This home-bred entry was born in March 2015, and is by Dermotstown Delboy.

Young member Conor Loane from Cookstown was crowned Simmental Stockperson of the Year.

Ballymena Sale 25th May 2016

Simmental bulls to 3,000gns

and heifers to 2,700gns

Bulls reached a ceiling of 3,000gns, while heifers sold to a top of 2,700gns, at the NI Simmental Club’s evening show and sale in Ballymena Mart.

Sale leader at 3,000gns was the first prize winning Kilbride Farm Gleno TSI+60 SRI+67, a polled entry from the Robson family – Billy, Michael and Norman, Doagh, Ballyclare. Sired by Danish-bred stock bull Sneumgaard Imperator, this fourteen-month-old bull was bred from the Crugmelyn Brenin daughter Kilbride Farm Eunice 151D. He is the breed’s top 5% for calving ease +6.2, and eye muscle area +4.6, and was snapped up by suckler herd owner Owen Miskelly from Ballynahinch, County Down.

Norman Robson exhibited the first prize winning Kilbride Farm Gleno sold for a top price of 3,000gns. He was congratulated by Paul McDonald, judge.

Next best at 2,800gns was the second placed Stralongford Governor TSI+81 and SRI+ 89 bred by James Hanna, Trillick, County Tyrone. Born in February 2015, he was sired by the Raceview King son Ashland Brandy, and is out of a home-bred dam by Omorga Murray. In the breed’s top 10% for milk +9, and top 25% for calving ease +2.1, he caught the eye of Ballymena beef producer Kevin MacAuley.

Claiming the male and supreme overall championship ribbons was Ranfurly Fendt TSI+64 and SRI+65 from David and Jonny Hazelton’s Dungannon-based herd. This eighteen-month-old bull was sired by Omorga Murray, and is bred from the Carnkern Titan daughter Ranfurly Lady Diana 6th. He came under the hammer at 2,700gns, selling to Owen Miskelly.

Male and supreme overall champion was Ranfurly Fendt sold for 2,700gns. Jonny Hazelton is pictured with judge Paul McDonald, Tempo.

Judge Paul McDonald, Tempo, awarded the reserve male and reserve supreme championships to Lisglass Geraldo TSI+53 SRI+57, bred by Leslie and Christopher Weatherup, Ballyclare. Born in February 2015, he was sired by stock bull Dermotstown Delboy – Balmoral champion in 2014 and 2015. His dam is the Omorga Prince daughter Lisglass Venus. This one attracted a bid of 2,400gns from suckler herd owner Francis Watson, Cloughey, Co Down.

Reserve male and reserve supreme champion was Lisglass Geraldo sold for 2,400gns. Christopher Weatherup is pictured with judge Paul McDonald.

Leading the female line-up at 2,700gns was the female champion Cleenagh Gem TSI+65 SRI+75 consigned by Adrian Richardson, Maguiresbridge. This yearling heifer was sired by the 10,000gns Drumlone Anchor, and is bred from the Raceview King daughter Cleenagh Tipsy. She joins Wesley Abraham’s Magheracrigan Herd based at Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh.

Female Champion was Cleenagh Gem sold for 2,700gns by Adrian Richardson, Maguiresbridge. Included is judge Paul McDonald, Tempo.

Next best at 1,750gns was the January 2015 born Drumlone Anchor daughter Drumacritten Gwen TSI+69 SRI+83, bred by William and George Nelson, Rosslea. This second prize winner sold to Owen Miskelly.

Duncan McDowell, Newtownards, claimed the reserve female championship with Castlemount Angela 2 TSI+75 SRI+79. Born in December 2014, she was sired by former stock bull Slievenagh Bonjovi, and is out of a dam by the 12,000gns Dovefields Gallant. Buyer at 1,700gns was Philip Robb from Ballynahinch.

Reserve female champion was Duncan McDowell's Castlemount Angela 2 sold for 1,700gns. Handler Richard McKeown was congratulated by judge Paul McDonald, Tempo.

Commercial females peaked at £1,220 paid to Robert and William Ferguson, Stewartstown; £1,140 paid to Kingsley Bell, Aughnacloy; and £1,080 paid to Colm McConnell, Armoy.

Trade for Simmental bulls was selective, with buyers bidding on a budget. Auctioneer Graham Loughrey confirmed that 15 bulls sold to level at £2,226; while 10 pedigree females averaged £1,628 per head.

The NI Simmental Club is indebted to its sponsors, Mike Frazer from the Edenvale Simmental Herd, and Connon General Merchants.
