Clarity on Newsletter advice on selling cows and brain stem testing charges

10/02/09

The NBA would advise all beef producers not to sell cows to any outlets until the dispute is resolved on the payment for brain stem testing of cattle over 48 months of age.

All livestock market operators are standing firm in their support of the beef farming sector, by not agreeing to deduct the brain stem testing charge from sellers and this is our chance to stand united and work together on this unnecessary cost burden.

If farmers don’t support the efforts being made by livestock market operators, the cost of testing will be forced on the industry and future support from the marts may not be forth coming.

Many small to medium sized abattoirs have agreed not to pass the test cost on to farmers selling their cows; these abattoirs are continuing to support the live auction ring selling mechanism and we the NBA applaud them for this stance.
