As many readers will already know the Simmental's
attributes abound, and it’s fascinating to look at what
the breed has to offer.
Relying on suckler cows to provide home-bred herd replacements
as well as top quality prime cattle capable of earning 260p a kilo
is regarded as an essential foundation for successful beef production
by John Hamilton who runs a 1900-acre
organic farm near Dunbar.
A suckler herd breeding policy producing home-bred heifer replacements
as well as providing an option to finish heifers as high quality
beef cattle is working well on a 4800-acre
estate in the Lammermuir Hills in south-east Scotland.
Significant improvements in growth and muscle depth – without
adversely affecting milking ability – are being been achieved
by the British Simmental, according to the latest figures from Signet.
July 2003 saw nearly 300 visitors converge at Hillocks of Clunie
near Dunkeld, part of the Snaigow Estate for the Scottish
Simmental Club Open Day. We were formally welcomed to Snaigow
by owner Viscount Edward Chelsea, and introduced to Jim Walker
our guest speaker at the Open Day.
The Simmental breed of cattle, bred in Britain for more than 25
years, has established itself as one of this country’s
premier beef breeds, thanks to its excellent beefing qualities.
This is no more evident than on a North
Yorkshire farm that runs both pedigree and crossbred cattle.
There has not been another beef breed to challenge the Simmental
sire for the past 12 years, according to Kevin
Daniel, a third generation farmer running 300 acres at Trebursye
near Launceston in Cornwall.
The Woods are first and foremost meat
people for that is the background of both their families, and like
so many butchers they love livestock and the challenge of breeding
the best. It is no surprise to find that Bowland Foods [wholesalers
of beef and lamb] and Popes Simms [winners of show and sale accolades]
are both successful.

recently represented The Ulster YFC in a panel discussion on Future
of the Young in the Agricultural Industry.
Dennis Mitchell
runs 150 Simmental cows on totally commercial lines at
Thursford, near Fakenham in Norfolk.
For the past 25 years, the first Wednesday in May has seen the on farm sale
of yearling store cattle from the suckler herd at Warter
Priory Farms on the Yorkshire Wolds.
A Simmental bull has achieved a record weight
gain of 3.33kg a day on an upland farm in Co Durham.
Scottish Borders beef producer Rob Forrest admits
he is "upbeat" about the future for beef.

350 cattle breeding enthusiasts recently enjoyed a visit to Cromlix
